Imagine the following:
Your teen lacks some of the skills that are used to get their room clean. You needed to dig a little deeper to find which skills are to be addressed.
You both expressed the importance of having a clean room from your individual perspectives.
Step three in the DECIDE problem solving process is: Create Solutions.
Now you and your teen can brainstorm ideas for each item. Remember that brainstorming is the time to come up with as many ideas as possible.
Guidelines for brainstorming:
•Suspend judgment — on your teen and yourself.
•Write the ideas down.
•Keep in mind that far-fetched ideas often lead to the best solutions.
•Ask for clarification if either of you is not sure what the other means by any idea.
•Add to one another’s ideas.
•Have FUN with this!
Next time we’ll look at the fourth step in the DECIDE process –Identify Solution.
